How to choose the colour scheme for your website

October 19, 2016

According to various surveys, the impression a colour makes on people, can impact whether that product/service will be availed by the customers or not. So, colour scheme is one of the most important components of your website. It is very important to select suitable colours for the logo and headlines, the combination of the main colour with the complementary colours and the place and position of using the selected colours.

One need to be very careful while deciding the colour scheme. The main points that need to be kept in mind ,are

1. Selecting the right dominant colour for your website and brand.
2. Combining complementary colours to create your perfect colour scheme.
3. Choosing a background colour that works for you.

UNDERSTAND WHAT THE COLOUR STANDS FOR
Different colours attract specific types of visitors, and can change customer behaviour. Also there is a difference between the preferences based on the gender, age, profession etc. How you use the colour, can influence the conversion rate.

USE THE DOMINANT COLOUR ON YOUR WEBSITE APPROPRIATELY
Don’t use your dominant colour in a number of places, instead use it where you want your visitors to pay attention, or click the call to action. Your dominant colour should highlight the section you want to focus.

CHOOSE PROPER ACCENT COLOURS
Adding the correct accent colours makes your design look more professional. You can use a colour matching tool to help you select your accent colours such as Adobe Color CC tool. The proper use of the accent colours on your website is that these colours can be used to highlight secondary information on your website which is not the focus, but still, needs to stand out.

CHOOSE THE BEST-SUITED WEBSITE BACKGROUND COLOUR
The background colours of the website vary depending on where the visitors need to focus. For instance, for any informative websites or e-Commerce websites, white or a neutral background colour is usually used as their focus is on the content or products, rather than the design of the website. The background colour only helps to make the content more visible and readable.

Corporate / Business Websites promoting the brand usually use various shades of the dominant or brand colour as the background colour since the colour is closely related to the brand whereas while promoting a service you select a neutral or white background, again to make your content more attention-grabbing. But for creative websites those related to fashion, design, food, beauty and other creative industries, there are no rules for background image or colours to be used. The only thing to keep in mind is to choose a background that makes the text or content comfortable to read.
